Vasco da Gama

Vasco da Gama is an explorer who was born in Sines, Portugal around 1460. In 1497 he was commissioned by the Portuguese King to find a maritime route to India. He was brought up in a noble family, little is known about his upbringing, except that he was the third son of Estevao da Gama. On the 8th of July 1497 he captained a team of four vessels, including the St. Gabriel, to find a sailing route to India and the East, he started his first voyage. Following several months of sailing, da Gama finally reached and sailed around the tip of Africa, the Cape of Good hope and he started sailing up the eastern coast of Africa. After almost a year of sailing his crew finally managed to reach Calicut, India on May 20, 1498, da Gama and his crew were welcomed by the local Hindu ruler, they stayed in Calicut for three months. In 1499, he returned to Lisbon and was greeted as a hero, for successfully navigating a maritime route to the East. Vasco da Gama died in Cochin, in 1524 and then his body was sailed back to Portugal, and buried in 1538.
